As parents, we always want to give more, do more, and protect more. Still, there are times when we blame ourselves for even the possibility, the vision of what could, might go wrong. I know I have experienced that feeling many times regardless of the support and encouraging words from others. Our world growing up wasn’t perfect but we have an undeniable tendency to wish for a perfect one for our children and find ourselves guilty if it doesn’t happen that way. In many ways, I felt like that until today while watching my daughter. All in a sudden, unconsciously, she made me realized that I have made a great job raising my children; that my mission with them is complete. They have grown to be their own unique individuals. They have learned to manage their lives under their own terms. Through peaceful and stormy times, they have grown to be strong and self-sufficient people, standing for what they believe. They have learned to be people of faith, loving and caring. What else could a mother ask for? In the end, it is not about what others think but about what they believe is good for them. Watching her made me understand that from now on they are in charge of their own lives and I am sure they will know exactly what to do.
There are many purposes in life to be attained at different stages. Although mothers never stop being mothers, my cycle here is transforming. I am looking at a different life purpose now, the one that reaches out further from me and the world that surrounds my true self. It is the purpose of being present, of sharing with others, of seeing and experiencing the many faces and lives of others. This is the stage of giving back, giving to me, and expressing gratitude for all my life’s blessings, which have been many. It is the purpose of opening up to what life has to offer me.
I thank my children for the opportunity of being there for them when they needed me, for showing me the path to true love, courage, persistence, and strength. I am glad that I was the one chosen by them to transit this world. We have done a wonderful job together. Now, we will witness in awe what we are able to do with our own paths.
